Background of the Study
The adoption of Information Technology (IT) in traditional retail businesses has the potential to enhance operational efficiency, customer service, and market competitiveness. However, traditional retail businesses often face significant barriers to IT adoption, such as financial constraints, resistance to change, and inadequate technical knowledge (Adebayo et al., 2023).
In Plateau State, traditional retail businesses are integral to the local economy but remain largely reliant on manual processes. The slow pace of IT adoption limits their ability to leverage technological advancements for growth and customer satisfaction.
This study investigates the challenges of IT adoption in traditional retail businesses in Plateau State, highlighting the factors that hinder adoption and potential strategies for overcoming these barriers.
Statement of the Problem
Traditional retail businesses in Plateau State face difficulties in adopting IT solutions, which limits their ability to compete in a technology-driven market. Challenges such as high costs, lack of technical expertise, and cultural resistance to change prevent these businesses from fully utilizing IT for operational efficiency and customer engagement.
The limited adoption of IT also hampers their ability to integrate with broader supply chains and digital payment systems. This study aims to explore these challenges and propose solutions for effective IT adoption.
Objectives of the Study
1. To identify the challenges of IT adoption in traditional retail businesses in Plateau State.
2. To assess the impact of these challenges on business performance and customer engagement.
3. To propose strategies for overcoming barriers to IT adoption.
Research Questions
1. What are the challenges of IT adoption in traditional retail businesses in Plateau State?
2. How do these challenges affect business performance and customer engagement?
3. What strategies can be implemented to overcome barriers to IT adoption?
Research Hypotheses
1. Traditional retail businesses in Plateau State do not face significant challenges in IT adoption.
2. Challenges in IT adoption do not significantly impact business performance and customer engagement.
3. Strategies for overcoming IT adoption barriers do not significantly influence adoption rates.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on markets in Plateau State, analyzing the challenges and potential solutions for IT adoption in traditional retail businesses. Limitations include limited access to business-specific data and variations in IT adoption levels across businesses.
